The Reykjavik Marathon in a new social media experiment

14.08.2012
Islandsbanki and The Reykjavik Sports Union have launched Reykjavík Runs Us, an innovative new promotional campaign for The Reykjavik Marathon. The campaign makes use of various social media platforms and is designed to provide new and different experience of the Reykjavík Marathon and the City for non-residents.

On the project’s website, www.reykjavikruns.us, runners and others can explore 21 places on the marathon route through various different types of media, including a partly animated clip showing the Mayor of Reykjavik Jon Gnarr repeatedly firing a starting pistol in his office. Elsewhere, users find archive photos and films from areas where they’ll be running, animated gifs, music performances, as well as hidden gems located throughout Reykjavik as described by the locals. In the run up to the Marathon more and more places are added to the project’s website. Visitors can also participate in the initiative on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr.com and other social media.

More than 12,000 participants are expected to run in this year’s Íslandsbanki Reykjavík Marathon, including well over a thousand international runners from more than 50 countries. The race takes place on 18th August. Those interested and still not registered can register on www.marathon.is

Besides the Marathon itself, one of the attractions for local runners is the collecting of vows for non-profits and charities on the website www.hlaupastyrkur.is

(currently available in Icelandic only).
